The Artwork

The touch of a human hand.

Look closely at a painting and you can follow the hand that made it. A broken edge. A colour showing through another. A brushstroke that catches the light.

These photographs follow one of Vinki’s paintings as it takes shape, from the first marks on the canvas to the last touches of sea foam.

Where it begins.

First stage of Vinki’s coastal painting: sketched rock arch, patches of sky and dark foreground on exposed canvas

A few lines give the arch its shape. Patches of colour suggest the sky. Much of the canvas is still bare, with room for the painting to find its way.

Colour finds its place.

Second stage: warm brown rock and yellow light emerge while the foreground remains unfinished

Warm earth colours gather around the arch. Yellow light appears beneath it. The first marks remain visible beside areas that are beginning to feel solid.

The water begins to move.

Third stage: blue and white brushstrokes begin to form waves around the rocks

Blue and white strokes break across the dark foreground. Their direction gives the water movement. Up close, you can still see the separate marks that make the sea.

Layer by layer.

Fourth stage: more layers of colour and light develop the rock surface and moving water

Small touches change the weight of a rock, the warmth of its surface, the space between one wave and the next. The painting carries those choices in its layers.

A moment, held in paint.

Finished coastal painting by Vinki, with sunlight on the rock arch and foaming waves below

From a distance, an arch above the sea. A little closer, the traces of a person who spent time looking and making.

In a world where images can appear in seconds, we want to keep a place for this slower kind of attention. For work with a surface, a history, and a human hand behind it.

That is what we hope you feel in Vinki’s paintings.
